Blog, Creativity, Scribbles

I visited a friend this evening, she had just finished up a game she’s been struggling with for a while. She has been sick just as I have, we probably caught the same flu at the same party.

She is one of my closet friends, we usually fall into discussions about art, our own art, working with our own art and development. We say our thoughts and reflect back and forth, and it feels quite nice to try to put words to how we feel about working with art and trying to move forward.

Today we fell into discussions about honesty, and not the honesty you think about when you talk about “having an honest work”. This talk rather took the form to try to put words on how we feel when we find that sweet spot where you can stand behind the work you have done and feel that the actually artwork feel honest from your heart. It might sound a bit weird but let me explain how we were thinking.

When we start out we copy, borrow and find a way of making art that feel good right there and then but as we move forward you grow and what you have been doing feels more like history. The lines you have been making do not make you satisfied, it is lines you have done before but they do not feel right, you have evolved.

And now you could say that; ” well we evolve all the time so then we are never making honest work…”

Some people find the type of style that fits really well from day one and for some it takes longer time. Perhaps what we are speaking of is the actually style of art, but that is not quite it either, you can have a style but still searching for a area of expertise. Perhaps we were talking about what we can stand behind, who am I behind that small thumbnail who should say everything about who I am as an artist. Perhaps being honest in your art is about finding the style and area which you think represent yourself.

I feel like we had an interesting talk today as I have been thinking the same thoughts to myself but not really uttered them and put the subject up for discussion. It has felt a bit lonely thinking about representation on my own. Offcourse I have been thinking of who I am as an artist, offcourse I have been thinking about what kind of art I can stand behind and also the thought about my development when it comes to style.

Our cups were almost empty and it was time for her to deal with some sketching and I have been feeling some more inspiration lately too so I really wanted to sketch for a bit too. We hugged and went separate ways. We came to some kind of bottom line: continue to experiment and everything does not have to become something overtime we set out to create something.

Time to pull out that pencil and draw a few quick before bedtime, work tomorrow ❤
